Meet our Team

The Foundry is composed of a core team of Mentors, each with extensive foundational experience in fields critical to a fledgling company’s growth and success. Participants will have regular one-on-one sessions with mentors and attend group virtual programs designed to deliver critical information about launching a startup. The Vulcan Anvil Program also provides access to industry-specific Advisors — one more way we help ensure our participants have the tools and opportunities to succeed. The Foundry is managed with the guidance and leadership of our Board of Directors.

Melissa Kann

Melissa Kann

Director of Programming, Board Member

Melissa Kann is a California attorney with experience representing emerging startups, new-media companies, technology companies, independent production companies, authors, and artists. Ms. Kann is a contract attorney for Contentstack, a leading SaaS content management provider. She also serves Of Counsel to Lachman Law, a firm focused on technology and data privacy, and is the Owner of the Law Offices of Melissa V. Kann. She has been an associate attorney to a boutique media and advertising law firm and served as in-house legal counsel to a large, multinational technology company. A member of the State Bar of California, Ms. Kann is a graduate of the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and the Thunderbird School of Global Management, with specialties in international commercial law, and international trade. She also spent two years in Tokyo as Cultural Liaison to a large multinational Mergers & Acquisitions law practice group.

David Hayman

David Hayman brings three decades of successful senior executive leadership and exceptional business management skills in both public and private companies. As a Chief Executive Officer and/or President of several international companies, including consumer, medical products, and cosmetics, he has a unique understanding of Entrepreneurship. Mr. Hayman possesses extensive knowledge and success with high-growth companies as well as start-ups, turnarounds, and acquisitions. An M.I.M (master’s degree in international business) and the ability to speak fluent Japanese complement his understanding of cultural diversity, and global markets.

Myia Williams

Myia Williams is a versatile professional with a diverse background in journalism, marketing (digital and traditional), and grant writing. She brings a wealth of expertise to any project. In addition to her academic pursuits, Myia has also achieved a Small Business Management & Entrepreneurship Certificate. Currently, she is working on her BaSc in Psychology and AS in Marketing, demonstrating her commitment to personal and professional growth.

With a strong foundation in project management, marketing, business growth, digital media development, and customer service, Myia possesses a well-rounded skill set to excel in various roles. Additionally, she is dedicated to advancing her linguistic abilities and expanding her proficiency in Spanish. Myia’s diverse background and unwavering drive for success make her a valuable asset to Vulcan and assure you that she will significantly impact any project she works on.

Seth D. Abelson

Seth D. Abelson

Board Member

Seth D. Abelson has extensive experience in teaching grant writing, composition, and English- and foreign-language literatures. Mr. Abelson holds degrees in Comparative Literature from UCLA and Princeton University with emphases in translation studies, business communication, literary translation, and Francophone literature of the Caribbean, the Maghreb (North Africa), and West Africa. Mr. Abelson’s teaching experience in writing includes undergraduate-level instruction in composition, grant writing, and introduction to literary forms. His foreign-language teaching experience includes ESL, francais langue etrangere, and German for French speakers at the Ecole Ozanam (Lyons, France).

Ken Bolding

Ken Bolding is a Curriculum Developer at the Transportation Workforce Institute and an Associate Professor of Digital Media at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. During his 30-years as a Curriculum Developer, Instructional Designer, Technical Writer, and Corporate Trainer, Ken has created innovative training solutions in industries as diverse as business and personal finance software (Intuit), payroll processing, wireless telephony (AT&T Wireless), and temporary staffing. He routinely achieves greater than 90% top-box scores for his self-paced multimedia modules and is a recipient of the Intuit Jordan award for excellence as an Instructional Designer, as well as numerous awards for public speaking. He is an experienced filmmaker and multimedia creator, who has worked on more than 50 film projects, including instructional and corporate videos, narrative shorts, web series, and feature films. He has recently received accolades for teaching a course designed to help at-risk populations, such as the homeless and those reentering society after being incarcerated, to develop essential workplace skills.

Jeffrey Samson

Jeffrey Samson

Jeffrey Samson is an accomplished and innovative accounting and finance professional and currently serving as Deputy Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (DCFAO) at the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). He has more than 15 years of accounting and financial management experience at for-profit, not-for-profit, and government organizations. Jeffrey brings significant skills in cash flow management, budgeting and forecasting, financial analysis, internal controls design and maintenance, risk management, financial systems conversion, timely and accurate financial reporting, contracts and procurement, grants management and compliance, and superior management/coaching of fiscal and administrative teams.  In his previous roles, Jeffrey served as Director of Finance with various non-profit and publicly funded organizations from 2011 to 2019.
